Bird Canada expanded its Edmonton electric scooter business and launched a membership program

Bird Canada has expanded its scooter business from the University of Alberta to the Bonnie Dunn area, with further expansion in Edmonton.

The company announced the expansion on Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of the city's founding.The company first saw the Bird electric scooter on city streets last August, when it launched with a fleet of about 400 planes.

Nate Currey, Bird Canada's vice general manager, said the fleet would expand by a third in addition to the expanded area, although he did not provide an exact number.Having electric scooters on campus would be the company's first in Canada, he said.

Bird Canada is also launching a new loyalty program for frequent users that offers different discounts based on how many rides someone takes on the scooter facilities.

Participants who take five rides over 28 days will receive a 10% discount each time and will be able to book the scooters in advance for up to 30 minutes for free.Those who ride 20 times over 28 days will get a 30% discount on all rides and will be able to book electric scooters 60 minutes in advance for free.

Since its launch last year, Curry said they have had fewer vandalism and sidewalk riding problems in Edmonton.

"It's more socially acceptable [now]," he says.People know what to do.We found that the number of passengers was increasing.What we've seen is that our travel time (time) has actually doubled on average from last year.This shows that people actually use them not only for entertainment, but also in a truly meaningful and purposeful way.It's really a good way to travel."
